Edgar Allan Poe

Considered part of the American Romantic Movement, Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, literary critic, and editor. He was famous for his outstanding stories of mystery and horror. He is one of the American authors who popularized writing in the form of short stories. In addition, he is regarded as the founder of detective fiction style and one of the pioneers of science fiction. His life was full of hardship and adversity as he struggled to earn a living, depending solely on writing.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on 19 January 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Edgar’s parents died when he was only two years of age, and although he was not formally adopted, he was taken in by a wealthy merchant and his wife from Richmond, Virginia named John and Frances Allan. He studied at the University of Virginia for a brief time and attempted to pursue a military career. In 1827, Edgar Allan Poe used an anonymous name, 'a Bostonian', at the start of his publishing career in a book entitled 'Tamerlane and Other Poems'.

After several years, Poe was recognized for his unique approach to literary criticism. He changed his interest in writing prose, and found a job writing for periodicals and literary journals. In 1835, while residing in Baltimore, he married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. He gained success in the publication of his poem, 'The Raven', in January 1845. At the age of 40, Poe died from an unknown cause. Some say he was murdered; others claim that he died from alcoholism and various diseases.
