Cory Doctorow was born on July 17, 1971, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian author of science fiction, a journalist and a blogger. He is also a Jewish activist. His parents are both Trotskyite educators. He finished high school in the SEED School, which is a free school in Toronto. He did not earn a college degree.
In 1999, he established a software company called Opencola, which was sold in 2003. In 2006, he moved to Los Angeles to work with the company Electronic Frontier as a Coordinator of European Affairs. From 2006 until 2007, he was a professor at the University of Southern California.
In January 2003, he released his first novel entitled ‘Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom’. In March of the same year, his first novel was re-released under a different name.
Doctorow won the Best New Writer award from the John W. Campbell association in 2000, Best First Novel award from the Locus group and best Canadian Science Fiction Book for his short story. In 2008, he released ‘Little Brother’ under a licence with Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike.
Doctorow contributes to Booing Boing, the weblog with which he is an editor. He also writes in ‘Popular ‘and ‘Make’ magazines and other newspapers. In 2004, he wrote an article for Wikipedia about himself.
